So the last post was supposed to end with some ipod talk, but that corporation movie was sitting on me! So yeah, with the new computer we got a complimentary ipod (because I am a student). I was kinda excited about this (first ipod and all), but also clouded with a whatever emotion. The deal is this; I can't figure out how to integrate this thing into my life?!
I like to hear the city, the wind, the people, the nuances...so plugging in while walking is kinda silly. In my car we have KEXP and cds; both albums and mixes. So I hop in my car carefully take out this gorgeous device that I don't want to scratch, pop in my tape adapter, quickly (ha!) select something to listen to from 10.5 days worth of music and then drive 5 minutes to the grocery? Clunky.
So I was at a loss, but I may have figured out my corner on ipods. Video podcasts. They're videos of stuff you wanna see, you subscribe, they end up in your itunes and then you're stuck in an airport and yes! you are catching up with culture. This kinda negates my first point about hearing and seeing what is around in the moment, but give me a break I am trying to fit this technology into my life. I need it, right?
2nd strategy is this: I make ipod videos of the stuff I am working on to show to clients, friends, etc...? Maybe...it's probably as close as I will get to a laptop for awhile. I bet Radio Raheem could answer my dilemma.

So next post. A video podcast that everyone should subscrible too. Stay tuned!

D-AMN! You know how much you're my man?! You took it from iPod critique to the hizzy of Hip Hop - Mr. Rahiem! Re-donkulous...ly... beautiful...
RR definitely had/has the answers...
How are those mixes working for you, btw?
I share in your struggles with the iPod - definitely too clunky... I use it primarily for podcasts and vodcasts, ironically enough... its been real helpful in staying up on what others are teaching, news, new music and especially keeping me stoked when the surf is flat...
But I know all the kids are so stoked about the new iPod... it is slick...
the moral i'm taking from your thoughts: its too easy to use the pod to close ourselves off from our surroundings vs. as a tool to expand our surroundings... errr, something like that...
I have reached a state of near nirvana cruising around my lawn John Deer style while my ipod is gloriously clicking around on shuffel. Truly I thought the clouds would open up and I rise up to heaven on my mowing chariot.
Z-man, I too find myself wrestling with this complex relationship between myself and my sexy shiny mistress. She serves the rather convenient purpose of helping me listen to playback of home recordings while traveling to and from my various destinations of employment. I enjoy the supposed "random" selections she chooses to juxtapose while wearing her shuffle hat while I'm mowing my crispy brown fire hazard of a lawn. Somehow she makes it seem natural that The Band performing "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" would be followed by Dino crooning over a "White Christmas"
I'm digging on the lovely world of podcasting. Perhaps sadly, it has come to fill a void which may or may not have been left by the majority of radio airwaves. That's up for debate.
However, as I walk the streets as I often do, I become lonesome in observing the growing masses who seem continually tuned out to the immediate life around them. Hopefully, as you point out, we can continue to find ways to use these tools to find and create deeper connections with one another.

It's ALL about the playlists man. Each one is like it's own mix tape, but put it on shuffle so your sure to be anticipating what might come up next. I choose the playlists carefully ex. "contemplative", "folk", "modern folk", "favorites" etc. etc. Oh, and then there's always the playlist of "New Stuff" which is where all the new emusic downloads go initially.....it's ALL about the playlists brother.....

the ipod has not changed my life in the same way that tivo has - yes, all, i enjoy stimulating the tv junkie. i recognize this is neither hip or culturally acceptable but, whatever. so, the ipod - how do i use it? well, i've eliminated the use of cd's in my car...just plug that sucker in and let it rip. of course i have a 20 mile commute to work (another totally un-hip and un-acceptably midwestern trait).
