in situ:

somewhere between success & failure

encyclopedia asthmatica vol. 1

It was hard not to spill the beans in blog world this summer as Gala and I engaged on the intensely fun and challenging project "Encyclopedia Asthmatica" for Asthmatic Kitty Records. However, I can spill with all appropriateness now as the DVD is now available for pre-order here.

Pitchfork also threw up a fine post here.

The project was typical fashion for me as I took the dangerous road again of pitching ideas for things I was sorta not experienced in; namely stop-motion animation which comprises all of the menus inside AK first DVD compilation of nearly 2hrs of content. When it was all said and done we designed the packaging, the whole dvd environment, and promo materials as well. It was a thoroughly immersive project that was great to be a part of.

Gala and I worked together in awesome fashion. I didn't even make her cry. And so we have decided that we will work on more projects together after all.

Rock. I am especially encouraged that crying when working on projects together is a possible outcome, as it makes me feel more normal.

It may have been hard not to spill the beans but as a result it's almost magical to see (I lack words here... I keep making this gesture with my hands, like they are holding something round, like packing a snowball) I guess to see the finished whole (or piece/trailer) in it's polished completeness at first viewing. You have such a different perspective, I would imagine, having spent months conceiving, creating, assembling and perfecting it. The rough, labored process yields a seamless magical unfolding of a kind of glory. If that makes sense.

I love that you mention you didn't make Gala cry and you couple that with a photo of her lively smile, which is so nice to see, too. :)
